A Woodville woman was charged with neglecting her four horses, including one that had to be put down, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
Leon County's Animal Control division first got a complaint about Suzanne Ward in July, saying she was not caring for the horses, spokesman Chris Chase said. Officers began working with her to make sure the horses were tended to.
By early October, an animal control officer on the case found that the horses weren't being fed and left a warning notice. The next day, the horses were taken away for their own safety after a veterinarian examined them, Chase said.
On Oct. 6, one of the horses had to be euthanized because of "complications brought on by neglect," Chase added.
"These horses were extremely emaciated," said Leon County Animal Control Director Richard Ziegler. "They had protruding hips, ribs and loins; their faces were drawn."
He described the remaining horses, two mares and a stallion, as "Arabian-type." They will recover and could be retired as field or farm horses, Ziegler said.
Ward, 29, was charged Wednesday, Oct 19, with four felony counts of animal cruelty and released on $10,000 bail. She told detectives she could not afford to care for the horses, Chase said.
She has no other criminal record, court records show. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
