Veterinarians in Sioux Falls are evaluating the health of 55 dogs and eight cats taken out of an Iowa home on Oct 18.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Department says it received complaints about the home near Harris, got a search warrant, and discovered the filthy living conditions. That's when officials called the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society for help.

Fleas, fur matted from feces and dogs everywhere. The humane society says it wasn't a puppy mill, but a case of hoarding in rural osceola county iowa.

Suzanne Zutter with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society said, "There were 55 dogs inside the home, a small home, there was inbreeding going on a few litters and nursing mothers.

With two litters and so many dogs, the humane society wasn't even sure which puppies went with which mother. Zutter says, "At this time we're feeding them taking care of their immediate needs placing them in nice clean housing."

Zutter says it's rare for the Humane Society to assist in out of state rescues, but in this case she was glad to help. She said the Sioux Falls Humane Society was asked to help because it's the closest one that can handle such a large number of dogs.

Case Updates

Three people from Osceola County in northwest Iowa have been sentenced to 30 days in jail for animal neglect.

Mark Leroy Shreve, Arlene Joyce Shreve and Mark Brenden Shreve were sentenced Dec. 16 on five counts each of animal neglect. All but four days of the 30-day jail sentences were suspended, and they were also placed on two years each of probation. The trio was ordered to pay restitution of more than $1,900 to the Osceola County Sheriffs Department and a local veterinarian as well.

On Oct. 8, 2005, 55 dogs and 8 cats were rescued from the Shreve residence and taken to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. After undergoing veterinary care, the animals became available for adoption. All but two of the dogs have gone to homes in the community, Humane Society officials said.

As of Oct 28, no charges had yet been filed. Weber said his department is still investigating and waiting for reports from Berkland and the Humane Society.

Osceola county attorney Bob Hansen said last week that although no decision regarding possible charges has been made, his office is looking at Chapter 717B.3 of the Iowa Code, which addresses animal neglect, a simple misdemeanor.

If charged with a simple misdemeanor, the Shreves could face a maximum of 30 days in jail, a fine of $50 to $500 or both for each count. The Shreves could possibly be charged with one count for each animal.
