A Belmont County man is facing animal cruelty charges after humane officers say they found more than a dozen pit bulls living in bad living conditions.

"Three, I believe, were in a dog fight which I was told happened on the property, and the other one had a skin infection," Belmont County Humane Officer Lisa Williams said. "He was pretty well infected, his face was swelled, and he smelled of rotting flesh."

Fourteen pitbulls were confiscated in all, and they are all being housed in a safe location while they recover.

"To see them in that condition - these dogs do love people, but they are dog aggressive," said Williams. "If they were spayed and neutered and kept in better conditions than they were, this might have been avoided."

Williams says she is looking into the possibility that pit bulls are being bred specifically to fight in Belmont County.

"There is not evidence of it, but there is a lot of gossip of it," she said. "If anyone knows anything give me a call because I would surely like to put that to an end."

Williams says it will ultimately be up to a judge to decide who gets custody of the animals.
