The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and state environmental police confirmed they are investigating whether a group of Blackstone teenagers attacked the bird on Sept. 27, breaking several of its bones and forcing the bird to be euthanized.
Police Chief Ross Atstupenas said his department is not handling the case, but would be willing to help the MSPCA if requested.
Providence, R.I., resident Debi Garceau-McGarry said this week she found the heron struggling to move its neck and bleeding profusely at about 6:30 p.m. The animal lover, who has several pet birds, discovered the heron had broken both wings and possibly had broken legs. She said she took it to Ocean State Veterinarian Specialists in East Greenwich, R.I., where it was later put down. References« MA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Worcester County, MA
