Animal control officials think two giant dogs that were found nearly starved to death may have been neglected by their owners. Officials said the owners will be prosecuted, if they can be found.

An animal control officer found the dogs roaming free on Bethel Road, just south of Mooresville in Morgan County.

Officials said the mastiff dogs were in pretty bad shape.

Mastiffs are very large dogs, at about 3 and a half feet tall and commonly 200 pounds or more.

The dogs, named Adam and Alex, were anything but strong when they were found.

One dog was about 80 pounds under weight. The animal's spine was sticking out and its ribs were protruding.

The other dog had a gaping hole in his leg that was bleeding.

"The veterinarian wasn't quite sure. He said it could have been a car. It could have been barbed wire. It could have been a dog fight," said animal control officer Wil Weber. "He wasn't exactly sure what the cause of the injury was."

No one knows what the dogs were doing roaming around the Morgan County countryside. Animal workers fear that they were dumped there and left to die.

Both dogs were severely malnourished and possibly abused. No one in the area is claiming them, but the mastiffs are neutered, meaning they once had a home.

As investigators look for leads, the Morgan County Humane Society is looking for room to house the two dogs.

The shelter is overcrowded. Alex and Adam are crammed in with animals much smaller than them.

Authorities hope someone will recognize the neglected dogs and may possibly know their owners.

"A dog that should weigh 200 pounds stands out in a crowd," Weber said. "It's a very striking dog."

Officials said the dogs were not micro-chipped. They were found on the night of Oct 2. Since then, they have been power-fed. The dog with the injury has been on antibiotics.

The animals are up for adoption now, but could also be sent to a rescue shelter.

Officials urged anyone with information about the dogs to call the Morgan County sheriff's office.
