Animal services officers charged a 23-year-old man in early October with felony animal cruelty in connection with the killing of ducks at Beneva Place Apartments.

Tanner Nicholas Flowers, who lives in the complex on Queens Street, was also charged with misdemeanor poison exposure.

The incident occurred in Sept 2005 when Flowers fed the ducks a chemical called Avitrol. He thought it would disorient the birds and make them easier to catch. Flowers told officers that seven ducks died, and he released 15 at Myakka River State Park. Officers found four more dead ducks. They took five other ducks to an emergency veterinary clinic, according to a report.

One of the ducks was euthanized and the others were returned to the pond.

Flowers works as an animal remover for Tru-Tech Inc. He said the apartment managers hired him to get rid of the ducks.

The pond has about 10 ducks now, and some residents say it's not the same any more.
