Maria Rivera was walking her dog -- named Beluche -- on Vermont Avenue near Lake Worth Park when the animal was shot in the leg. Rivera said she doesn't know why anyone would want to hurt her dog, but she said it could have been worse.

"My kids walk him too sometimes. And if my kids were around him in that moment, something really bad could have happened, Rivera said.

"It's not nice. If it could happen to a dog, it could happen to a kid too," Rivera's son, Fransisco, said.

Veterinarians treating Beluche said he was shot with a shotgun. The dog is taking antibiotics. No arrests have been made.
