A badly decomposed cat in a woman's Brooklyn apartment led to her Oct 9 arrest for neglecting four surviving cats, an ASPCA agent said.
Laura Daniusis, 38, was arraigned early Oct 9 on four counts of animal cruelty, said Joe Pentangelo, an ASPCA special agent. Each is punishable by up to a year in prison. She will be back in court Oct. 26.
On Aug. 20, ASPCA agents responded to 549 66th St. in Brooklyn after a neighbor complained that a foul odor was coming from Daniusis' apartment, Pentangelo said. "They complained that it smelled like a dead body in there," he said. "It wasn't a human body, but it was a dead cat."
Indeed, investigators found a dead male cat, which was in an advanced state of decomposition. Daniusis was not charged in the cat's death because a subsequent necropsy could not determine the cause of death, Pentangelo said.
Pentangelo said all four cats were skinny, suffering from ear mites, flea infestation, and severe dehydration. After 10 days of care, one of the cats gained 59% of its body weight, he said.
Four other cats were found in the apartment, all suffering from malnutrition, dehydration and ear mites. They were taken to the ASPCA animal hospital at East 92nd Street in Manhattan, where they were evaluated.
