Hoarding - 11 cats, 3 dogs
Cheektowaga, NY (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jun 14, 2005
County: Erie

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Kathleen Miller

SPCA Special Agent Paul Breslin, and John Bauer and Michelle Diodate, of the SPCA's Animal Rescue Team, responded to 54 Chapel Ave. after receiving a call for assistance from the Cheektowaga Police and the Cheektowaga Fire Department.

Kathleen Miller, 49, contacted the Fire Department on June 14, 2005, after her
basement flooded; additional calls to the police and SPCA were made after members of the department arrived and saw the deplorable conditions in the house.

"The home has several rooms laden in animal excrement, but the basement's level of animal waste and garbage was the worst," Breslin states. "The odor levels were so extreme that entry into the structure required respirators, and it was difficult to see because our eyes were
tearing up so badly." The animal rescue lasted over three hours.

Miller was transported to Erie County Medical Center for mental evaluation. She has been charged with cruelty to animals and is scheduled to appear in Cheektowaga Town Court June 29 for arraignment. The animals are at the SPCA's Tonawanda shelter for physical examinations and, if necessary, treatment.
