Horse neglect
El Paso, TX (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Oct 2, 2005
County: El Paso

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Paul Garcia

The police department continues to investigate a possible case of animal cruelty in the Mission Valley. Neighbors informed local media about a pair of horses in the Mission Valley who they say were starved and skinny.

Detectives from the Mission Valley Regional Command Center are working on this case, trying to figure out if the two horses were neglected.

Neighbors near the 9600 block of Cindy were first to report the case to animal control Sunday, Oct 2. They say they were saddened to see the two skinny horses. Neighbors say one horse was too weak to even move.

On October 3, local media spotted the horses' owner Paul Garcia feeding his horses, but Mr. Garcia wouldn't speak on camera because of legality concerns. However off-camera, Mr. Garcia says it's not his fault the horses are skinny, he says he feeds them everyday.

Mr. Garcia also says he thinks his horses are sick because neighbors are feeding them bad food. El Paso veterinarian Jose Ramos, who specializes in horses, says it's possible for horses to become sick if they are taken off their routine diet.

Dr. Ramos also says the horses could also be skinny because they have parasites in their systems, but also points out the horses are more likely to catch parasites if they aren't fed properly.

Police told local media that blood samples were taken from the two horses Sunday, and the results should be in later this week to see if they are indeed sick.
