Two local men were arrested by the Auburn Police Department on the night of Sept 19 on felony charges they kicked and stomped a cat to death.

Chris R. Shaffer, 21, of 187 Cottage St., Apt. D, Auburn, and Steven M. Shaffer, 19, of North Main Street, Port Byron, were both arrested on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal and a violation charge of the city's prohibition against open containers of alcohol.

Police received a report on Sept 19 of four men drinking beer on the corner of Seymour and Washington streets and stomping on a cat, police said.

When patrol officers arrived, police found the cat dead and arrested four men nearby, including the Shaffers.

William A. Duthie, 40, of 189 Genesee St., Apt. 1, Auburn, and Michael Sean Woods, 21, of 32 Mary St., Auburn, were arrested on a violation open container charge for allegedly drinking with the Shaffers.

Woods also faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully dealing with a child for allegedly purchasing alcohol for Steven Shaffer.

Anyone concerned about the identity of the cat should contact the SPCA at 253-5841.

    Case Updates

Two brothers were convicted Monday in a bench trial of killing a stray cat held between them by snapping its head away from its body.

Chris Shaffer, 21, of 187 Cottage St., Apt. D, Auburn, and Steven Shaffer, 19, of North Main Street, Port Byron, both testified during the trial that another man, Michael Woods, 21, of 32 Mary St., Auburn, injured the cat at the corner of Seymour and Washington streets Sept. 19 and they killed the cat as an act of mercy.

Woods testified during the trial for the prosecution that it was the brothers who targeted the cat.

The Shaffers were originally charged with a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal, on which they were acquitted. Cayuga County Judge Peter Corning convicted them on a lesser charge, a misdemeanor of cruelty to an animal. They face up to a year in jail for their conviction.

"Both defendants grew up on a farm and were familiar with animals. They are animal lovers," said Jonis Strods, the attorney who represented Steven Shaffer.
