Cat shot with BB gun, resulting in death Cambridge, MA (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Sep 18, 2005 County: Middlesex
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: » Jacob Starling » 16 year old boy » 16 year old boy
Three Cambridge teenagers face animal cruelty charges for allegedly killing a woman's cat with a BB gun. Because animal cruelty is a felony, the teens face up to five years in jail if found guilty.
Hearing shots, the cat's owner said she looked out her window and saw a teen with a black gun raised.
"I said, `Hey, you didn't shoot my cat, did you?'" the woman, who asked that her name not be used, said while choking back sobs.
The boys fled and the cat's owner ran to the sidewalk, where she discovered her 5-pound Bengal cat, Molly, severely injured. The feline was rushed to Angell Animal Medical Center, where veterinarians discovered that the BB had gone through Molly's ribs, puncturing both her lungs.
The cat died on the night of Sept 21 after blood filled its lungs.
One 16-year-old boy and Jacob Starling, 17, of Cambridge were arrested shortly after the Sept 18 shooting.
Another 16-year-old boy, said to be the alleged shooter, escaped. Police say he is being tracked down and will be called into court.
Starling, a student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and the other boy arrested told police they didn't know their friend had a gun, according to a police report.
Molly's owner mourned the loss of her pet who was a neighborhood favorite.
"Everyone loved her,'' the owner said. ``She'd see a stranger in the street and stop and start rolling to be petted.'' References« MA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Middlesex County, MA
