Cat, pit bulls, python abandoned in apartment
Swampscott, MA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Sep 6, 2005
County: Essex

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jamie Martin

A local woman faces felony charges of cruelty to animals after two pit bulls, a cat and a 4-foot white python were found abandoned in her apartment at 36 Fairview Ave., according to Police Detective Sgt. Tim Cassidy.

Cassidy said officers received a tip about the abandonment earlier and when they went to the location Sept. 6, "they were met by a large quantity of black flies and, uh, strong odors, including the odor of rotting garbage."

Officers called upon the expertise of the Fire Department to force their way into the apartment, Cassidy said, but police officers had to wear air packs to enter the "dirty, smelly, flea-infested and feces-filled premises," he said.

The two dogs were found in one cage on the second floor, he said, and appeared to have survived several days without food.

The health inspector condemned the premises as unfit for human habitation and the MSPCA was called to assist with evacuating the animals, including the python, from the premises, Cassidy said.

Jamie Martin, 34, of 36 Fairview Ave. will face felony charges of cruelty to animals.
