The veterinarians at Safe Harbor Animal Rescue in Jupiter had never seen anything like Patches' injuries. He had 100 puncture wounds, his jaw was torn from his face and his feet were chewed off, but they did not put him to sleep.

"He was used for dog fighting bait in February. He was found by a motorist. He was crawling out of a canal," a worker at the animal shelter said. "He had such an incredible will to live that we felt we really had to give it our best shot."

Patches, too sweet to fight, too horribly injured to walk, too endearing to be put down, became the office pet.

"We'd always have to pick him up and take him out on the grass to go to the potty because his feet would bleed on the pavement," the shelter worker said.

Then, one day, Patches started to improve.

"He got up on the receptionist chair with his feet and started walking himself around the clinic," the shelter worker said.

He did it again, past the dance studio and the Moose Lodge, a balancing act on an office chair with wheels, sometimes with help and sometimes on his own.

"We were like, 'Hey, he's got something,'" the shelter worker said.

More often than not, Patches would stop at the door of the lodge. The lodge collected $600, and now there are leg braces on the way for Patches.

"Patches never gave up from the day they brought him in. It goes to show you just in here to see him when he went around to greet people how much love is in his heart and the people outreach for him," a lodge member said.

Patches, member of a maligned breed, torn to pieces in the cruelest of gambling games, left for dead in a ditch, was a fighter.

"He has built up tremendous muscles in his legs and his hips, and it's like he's almost smiling," the shelter worker said.

Patches is up for adoption. For more information, call Safe Harbor Animal Rescue at (561) 747-1598.
