Two people are in critical condition, one person is in custody, another is on the loose and a police dog has been shot in an apparent road-rage incident that ended with two vehicles in a canal. It all happened at about 11:30 on the night of Sept 12 at 64th Street and Indian School Road.

Witnesses said a car carrying four people and a truck carrying two people, were speeding north on 64th Street. Those witnesses said the truck was ramming the car from behind and two people in the truck were shooting at those in the car.

Both the truck and the car skidded into the canal. The car flipped over.

Several good Samaritans jumped into the water to help, police said.

"The officers did what they could," explained Sgt. Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department. "It's very rough waters at this part of the canal ...."

The four people in the car were taken to the hospital. Two of them had been shot -- one in the head and one in the back. They reportedly are in critical condition.

The two people in the truck, both of whom are considered suspects, managed to get out of the canal and ran away on foot.

One of them was cornered in a nearby neighborhood and taken into custody.

As officers approached that man, a police dog was shot, but it's not clear exactly how that happened. At last check, that dog was alive and is expected to be OK.

The other suspect remains on the loose.

At this point, it's not clear if anyone is missing in the wake of the incident. Divers are searching both vehicles.

Traffic is still restricted in the area as officers continue their investigation and crews work to get the car and the truck out of the canal.
