Two Barrie residents were charged with 16 counts of cruelty to animals after police officers found two dogs, three kittens and a rabbit dead in a Dunlop Street apartment in September.
According to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, three other dogs and 12 kittens were also found alive, but were suffering from severe starvation and flea infestation.
Cruelty officers were called in by police who received a call about a strong smell of decay.
A Labrador and a border collie were found starving in a bathroom, and a German shepherd was found locked inside a wire kennel without food or water. The crate was so small, the dog could not stand.
The 12 surviving kittens, and three dead ones, were found by investigators inside a bedroom.
All the animals were removed by SPCA investigators and are being nursed back to health. Their prognosis is good, but they will all require extensive veterinary care, with special food and medication needed for a full recovery.
