Ten hound dogs were seized in early September from Pip Brown, of County Road 150 in the Marbury community, said Linda Mefford, manager of the the Autauga County Humane Shelter. She had a court order to go back on Sept 9 and seize another eight animals.

"We found no evidence of food where the dogs were, and the only water was a bucket filled with green, slimy water," she said. "The dogs were very underweight, and all had what appears to be skin conditions. We have the power to take animals if there is evidence they have been neglected or abused. We took the 10 that were in the worst shape. I hope to get the others tomorrow."

A collar on one of the dogs listed Brown's name and phone number, but the number wasn't working. The phone book lists no one with that address.

A welfare check was performed at the Brown property after a resident of the Old Kingston community contacted the shelter.

"The lady said there was a dog in her back yard that was in bad shape," Mefford said. "I went out and got the dog. It was in very poor condition. We got a vet to look at it, and he said the animal had to be put down."

Photos show an emaciated animal with several wounds and cuts. Mefford said it had broken legs.

The vet said the dog may have been run over, but Mefford was concerned about its thin appearance. Brown's name was on the collar of the dog.

"We went out the next day and talked with Mr. Brown," she said. "We found the dogs in the woods across the road. Mr. Brown said he has kept hunting dogs all his life, but he had a bad watermelon crop this year and that's why the dogs looked so bad."
