On February 13, 2005, in Phoenix, Arizona, police were called to the defendant's home and when they arrived, people in the backyard began to flee. Police found evidence of cockfighting at the home. Defendant pled guilty to attempted cockfighting, a class 6 designated felony, and was sentenced to 18 months probation, to pay a $1,500 fine to the Arizona Animal Welfare League and a $2,000 fine to the Arizona Humane Society. Additionally, he was ordered not to own, possess, or control any animal (except one family dog that is subject to random welfare checks) while on probation, and to do 40 hours of community service.
