A paroled sex offender faces several criminal charges following a domestic disturbance, including allegedly killing a 5-month-old puppy. Jeremy Alan Kelly, 33, was arrested on Aug 25 after he, his girlfriend and her 11-year-old son returned home from the Union County Fair, State's Attorney Allen James said.

James said Anna police responded to an alleged domestic battery incident on East Lewis Street. Once on the scene they found a 5-month-old, 25-pound pit bull puppy dead at the residence.

James said Kelly allegedly beat the animal to death and began threatening to kill the girlfriend and her son. Police reports indicate Kelly had been allegedly throwing beer bottles at the two.

Union County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and discovered Kelly in the backyard of a neighbor's house. Kelly reportedly ran and officers pursued.

James said one of the deputies fell in a ditch and injured his elbow. Two more deputies tackled Kelly. James said Kelly allegedly bit one of the deputies on the hand in the struggle.

Kelly is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated cruelty to animals, two counts of resisting a peace officer and disorderly conduct, James said. Kelly is also charged with failing to register as a sex offender, since his residence apparently had changed from his original address on Lick Creek Road, James noted.

The Illinois Department of Corrections Web site lists a 33-year-old Jeremy Kellywhose relation to the aforementioned defendant cannot be verified by our officeas having been sentenced to 20 years behind bars in Cook County on charges of aggravated sexual assault filed in 1995.
