County: San FranciscoCharges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Convicted
Defendant/Suspect: Shadrach Go
Case Updates: 1 update(s) available
A dog owner in San Francisco who cut off his dog's ears to make it look tough was found guilty of felony animal cruelty and will be sentenced in September.
Shadrach Go, 25, of the city's Glen Park neighborhood faces a maximum 20-thousand dollar fine and or a year in jail. But animal control officials said he's likely to receive three years' probation, be prohibited from owning dogs for several years and ordered to perform community service. His sentencing is September 14th.
Animal Care and Control's investigation of the incident revealed that Go cut his dog's ears off with a razor blade while straddling the dog in a bathtub. The dog's mouth had been taped shut.
Go's girlfriend turned over the dog, named Smokey, Aug. 2 to San Francisco Animal Care and Control after she discovered what her boyfriend had done to the tan and white pit bull, the agency reported today.
According to Animal Care and Control spokeswoman Deb Campbell, this type of incident is fairly common, though not usually as cruel.
"We do get dogs in with home crop jobs, we call them. But this one was particularly severe. Most people do them when they're puppies," Campbell said.
Pit bull owners often cut the dog's ears to make the dog appear tough and to avoid them being ripped off during a dogfight, according to Campbell.
Animal control officials say Smokey is doing "remarkably well" and will be offered for adoption through a rescue group after he heals
Case Updates
Shadrach Go, on probation in San Francisco following a felony animal cruelty conviction in 2005 for taping his dog's mouth shut and cutting off his dog's ears with a razor blade, is currently in custody in the San Mateo County jail facing drug charges. Once these charges have been adjudicated, he will be transported to the San Francisco County jail on a no-bail warrant for violating his probation. |
