Dozens of cats were found at the home of an elderly Auburn couple. Richard Baldwin, 78, and Joan Baldwin, 81, were known to Auburn Police for years. Neighbors often offered them help, which the Baldwins turned down.

Officers suspect the Baldwins owned several cats and took dozens of feral cats under their wing by feeding them over the years.

The couple left their Summit Street home over a month prior, possibly taking some of the cats with them. However, they left more than 30 feral cats that have been trapped by volunteers. Many suffered from malnutrition, disease and infection and have been euthanized.

Volunteers are looking for homes for several rescued cats in Auburn. Contact Kathie Schmiechen at (530) 888-8405. Donations can also be made to Friends of the Placer County Animal Shelter, The Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation, The Placer County SPCA and the Animal Spay and Neuter Clinic.
