The Promotion of Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who shot a dog with a hunting arrow while he was in his front yard on the evening of Aug 15.

"Rudy," a black male Labrador retriever-mix, was in the front yard of his owner's Skyline Boulevard home near Harmony Lane when someone shot a hunting arrow through his left side around 8 p.m., according to PAWS President and Director Janice Titensor.

The arrow went completely through the dog's mid-thorax section and missed his heart by a quarter of an inch, she said. He also suffered a collapsed lung but is expected to recover.

His "foster mom" was in the backyard at the time of the attack, and Rudy jumped the fence into the backyard behind the house to get her attention, Titensor said. He was immediately taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

The dog is considered a "permanent foster dog" by the PAWS organization and is cared for by one of its members, to whom he is devoted, Titensor said.

This incident was reported to an animal control agency, but a report has not yet been filed with the Butte County Sheriff's Department, she said.

"We fear this cruel individual may continue to play these games," Titensor said. "This was on a busy residential street and wasn't out in the country. We want to put a stop to this (behavior)."

The organization thanked veterinarian Dr. Hare of North Valley Emergency Clinic in Chico for the initial treatment and Craig Brown, DVM, of Look Ahead Veterinary Clinic in Butte Valley for his after-treatment care, members said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Butte County Animal Control at: 538-7409, or Titensor at: 589-4178.

This is an animal cruelty case and shooting the dog with an arrow is illegal, officials say.

PAWS also is seeking donations to pay for the dog's veterinary care since it was costly. Anyone who'd like to donate to this cause may send a check to: "Rudy's Fund," P.O. Box 5715, Oroville, CA 95966. Or, people may drop off a donation at the PAWS Thrift Store at: 1900 Oro Dam Blvd., Oroville.
