Authorities said dozens of cats and dogs were found abandoned at a farm Hancock County. The animals were found on the afternoon of Aug 13. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa was called out to a farm just north of Clear Lake.
Josh Colvin, of the Animal Rescue League, said the animals were living in horrible conditions.
There were "makeshift kennels, dead dogs scattered throughout the property with live dogs, there was fecal matter underneath the kennels about 3 foot deep," he said.
Officials found eight dead dogs and 30 other cats and dogs abandoned without food and water.
The animals were brought to the Animal Rescue League where they received food, shelter and water.
For now, the animals will stay at the Animal Rescue League until an investigation is wrapped up.
"We're going to evaluate their temperament, evaluate their health, we're hoping that all of them can go up for adoption," Colvin said.
No arrests have been made in the case, but police are investigating.
Those who would like to adopt one of those abandoned cats or dogs can call the Animal Rescue League at (515) 262-9503.
