A 21-year-old Sayreville man allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend's Yorkshire Terrier, a Valentine's Day gift, after kicking the dog's crate several times, police said.

Anthony Blay of Sayreville surrendered to township police on the morning of Aug 14 and was later released on his own recognizance, according to Det. Jim Ryan.

Blay was charged with one count of cruelty to animals, a third-degree crime that could carry a five-year jail sentence, Ryan said.

Until recently, Blay had been staying with his now ex-girlfriend and her mother at a town house on Dahlia Circle in the township's Dayton section. Police declined to release the women's names.

"The couple had a falling-out recently, and the boyfriend returned Friday (Aug 12) morning to collect his belongings from the house," Ryan said.

Upset that his ex-girlfriend wasn't home when he stopped by at 4:20 a.m., Blay picked up the crate containing the 18-month-old dog, named Toni, and placed it in his pickup truck.

The mother asked Blay why he was taking Toni since he had given the pet to her daughter as a Valentine's Day gift, Ryan said. Blay then threw the animal crate out of his truck and began kicking the cage several times across the parking lot in front of the home, Ryan said.

The mother ran to the crate and checked on the 4-pound dog, but it was already dead, Ryan said. She then called police, who responded to a reported "dispute that ended with an animal being killed," Ryan said.

Blay had fled the scene by the time police arrived, Ryan said. Officer Rob Mazza turned the dog over to the township's animal control officer, Dave Kazanski.

A veterinarian will examine the dog this week to determine the cause of death, said Ryan. Police have notified the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals about the incident, he said.
