A Fairfax County woman was charged August 10, 2005 with cruelty to animals after four dogs and the remains of two cats were removed from an unoccupied, condemned duplex, Fairfax police said.

Animal control officers executed a search warrant Aug. 3 at a condemned house owned by the woman to remove four dogs. The mixed-breed animals were taken to the city shelter. Six live cats and two deceased cats were also impounded. At least two live cats remained in the ceiling of the house. All of the animals reportedly had fleas and were suffering from chronic skin conditions, and the cats had severe upper respiratory illnesses. One cat was euthanized. The other animals were to receive treatment.

Edith Charmaine Gray, 52, also was charged with failure to dispose of a dead animal, failure to provide the duties of a pet owner and failure to obtain rabies vaccinations. Her court date is Sept. 15. Gray is an attorney and member of the

Gray was convicted of animal cruelty. She was fined $250.00, and received one year in jail, with six months suspended. Gray was ordered to pay Town & Country (who houses the animals for the City of Fairfax) resitution of approximately $7,000. She has also been ordered to get psychiatric treatment and come back to court with mental health plan.

Authorities discovered one dead cat in freezer, one dead cat in the living room, one dead cat in the dining room, and a dead cat and a dead dog in the basement. They also found 4 live dogs and 5 cats. One of the dogs will likely be euthanized due to severe medical conditions. One of the cats was also euthanized due to illness.

According to sources, Gray's lawyer stood up and addressed the court, stating that a large bag of dog food could be seen in evidence photos. Her lawyer than stated that Gray was clearly feeding her animals - at which point animal control stood up and clarified for the court that the large bag was full of feces, not food, and that no food was present for the animals.

Gray is appealing the case. She remains in jail, as she was unable to post bond of $7,500.
