Dog beaten to death with baseball bat
Barbourville, KY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Sep 20, 2002
County: Knox

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Thomas III Brown

A Knox County man accused of beating a dog to death with a baseball bat has pleaded innocent to animal cruelty charges.

Thomas Brown III, 20, of Barbourville was arrested Sept. 5 after police say he killed a Labrador retriever belonging to another man. After the beating, officials said, Brown allegedly slit the animal's throat and tossed it over an embankment.

Brown was charged with second-degree cruelty to animals and criminal littering, according to a citation. Court documents say Brown allegedly beat the dog to death at the home of his wife's family.

Brown's sister-in-law Teresa Lewallen said she believed the dog was vicious after it bit her on the hand. "The dog kept coming into the yard and tried to fight with my dog that was on a leash," Lewallen said.

She said she called the dog's owner, who retrieved the animal, but it came back the next day.
