A dog that was shot through the neck by an arrow on the night of Aug 11 is doing fine this morning and is expected to be taken to the Pratt County Humane Society in the hope that its owner will claim it.

About 7:30 p.m. Aug 11, Pratt Police officers responded to a report of a black Labrador retriever seen in the area of Maple and Larimer Streets with an arrow in its neck. They were unable to catch the dog, Capt. Gary Myers said, and a local veterinarian was called to assist.

Dr. LuAnn Dorman said the dog came running to her and laid down. She was able to give it a sedative and take it to her clinic, where she removed the arrow, cleaned the wound and administered an antibiotic. The animal was kept overnight for observation.

The arrow went through the soft tissue of the neck, missing the vertebrae, Dorman said, and didn't seem to have done any real damage.

The Police Department will conduct an investigation.

"We do take an interest," Myers noted. "Even though it's an animal we eagerly and aggressively investigate to find the person responsible."

Misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and discharging a weapon in the city could be brought in Municipal Court. A guilty verdict could result in a jail sentence of up to a year and/or a fine of up to $2,500 for the cruelty charge and one month in jail and/or $500 for shooting within city limits, Myers said.
