A "mysterious substance" found near the body of a dead guard dog at an animal shelter near San Manuel has investigators bewildered. The year-old Doberman pinscher was found dead, surrounded by the substance, around 8:45 a.m. Aug 8 at a Pinal County Animal Care and Control facility at 27390 S. Redington Road, around four miles north of San Manuel, said Joe Pyritz, a Pinal County spokesman.
The dog was inside the fenced facility, but no signs of forced entry were found, he said.
Authorities don't know what chemical killed the dog and will analyze the substance at a state lab, he said. A hazardous-materials unit from the Arizona Department of Public Safety took samples.
An animal control officer and a kennel technician were evaluated at a Tucson hospital after they complained of dizziness and nausea after they were in the area with the dog, Pyritz said.
A Pinal County sheriff's deputy, a paramedic and five firefighters who came in indirect contact with the substance also were evaluated by DPS officers after they were thought to be possibly contaminated, too.
No other animals at the small facility were affected. The center has room for fewer than 20 dogs.
There have been no other recent incidents at the San Manuel center, Pyritz said, and there have been no recent reports of poisoning incidents in Tucson, said Marsh Myers, a spokesman for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
Poisonings are almost always motivated by a neighborhood feud, Myers said.
Anyone who suspects an animal has been poisoned should get the animal to a veterinary hospital, Myers said. The most common poison used on animals is antifreeze, he said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
