Police in Columbia are investigating an alleged act of animal cruelty. The bodies of two cats were found last week, both with their necks broken. The cats, Scooter and Honey, were found dead, one in the driveway, another in the garden.

It happened Aug 2 in Columbia. Susan Spadjinske came home to work to find Scooter and Honey crumpled on the ground.

"My vet recommended to us that we take one cat to be examined by the UConn Pathology Laboratory for a necropsy to find out what the cause of death might be."

"It's been determined poison was not used, and there appear to be no external wounds, guns knives things like that," says Sgt. J. Paul Vance.

Vets say the necks had been broken.

"Honey was 15 years old and I've had her ever since I moved out of my parent's house. She came to me from the Humane Society of Connecticut. Scooter was a stray, 8 years old, and he kind of adopted me," says Spadjinske.

State police say they have ruled out a wild animal, though it might have been a dog. investigators say they still have a long way to go on the investigation.

"We are offering a $2,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest should a person have done this."

State police say that the minimum penalty for cruelty to animals is a $1,000 fine and 1 year in jail, and as they investigate the whole community feels the loss.

"One neighbor brought me some flowers and left them for me in the garden, I've gotten cards in the mail from total strangers."
