Cat mutilated, dismembered with power tools
Spokane, WA (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Oct 19, 2002
County: Spokane

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Robert O. Peterson

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday on charges of mutilating his girlfriend's cat, Thumper, with power tools while the animal was alive.

Police said Robert O. Peterson drilled out Thumper's eyes and then cut the cat apart with a circular saw.

The atrocity occurred at the cat owner's home in the 3000 block of East Sharp, where police said Peterson had been living for 10 days. The woman found the animal's remains outside the house while she searched for her missing pet.

Police found the saw inside the woman's house and the drill bit in her driveway. Both tools had blood and hair on them, police said. They offered no motive for the crime.

Peterson was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree animal cruelty.

Peterson was convicted in July of fourth-degree domestic assault for beating his mother in Okanogan County. Deputy Prosecutor David Jorgensen said Peterson pleaded guilty.

Jorgensen said Peterson hit his mother several times, pushed her to the ground and "had her by the throat at one point."

Peterson has four felony convictions: two for theft, one for residential burglary and one for possession of stolen property.

In one of those cases, Peterson went into his landlord's room and took her jewelry and money when she evicted him from her home. He also took her car and tried to sell it to get money for marijuana, according to court documents.
