Sick dogs sold from shopping cart Revere, MA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Jun 9, 2005 County: Suffolk
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Phillip Doane
All eight neglected huskies taken from a man who was allegedly peddling sick pooches out of a shopping cart are in new homes, after police were flooded with calls to take in the poor pups.
Phillip Doane, 53, of Revere allegedly sold dogs out of a shopping cart in Revere before police caught him and then found more dogs living in squalor in his home.
More than 250 people called police wanting to adopt the dogs.
Carol Molito, who took in one of the dogs and named it Star, says the 4-year-old husky is timid and winces when she tries to pet it, said Molito who shelled out more than $200 in vet bills.
"His leg, you can see where he was kicked," said Molito of Revere. "He was mentally abused. They don't forget that quickly."
Revere Police Officer Julie Malvarosa on Friday picked up the last of the dogs at the North Shore Animal Hospital in Lynn and brought it to its new owner in East Boston.
Officers didn't find a single can of dog food in Doane's home when they searched it June 9, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley's office.
"The pups were lying in their own feces in the kitchen,'' Malvarosa said. ``Flies, bugs, you name it. You could smell the stench across the street.'"
Doane was charged in early August with one count of felony animal cruelty for neglecting two adult huskies and their pups.
He was released Aug 2 with the condition that he not take care, custody or control of any animals.
He is due back in court Aug 9 for a pre-trial hearing.
Doane was unavailable for comment.
Employees of Stop & Shop and Marshalls called cops on June 4 when they saw Doane selling dogs out of a shopping cart in the parking lot, police said.
"(They said) they were sick of seeing him sell these skeletal babies in this carriage," Malvarosa said.
She said Doane asked as much as $500 for one dog, but would pawn them off for as little as $40.
Revere police later searched his home and found eight puppies and adult dogs living in squalor. References« MA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Suffolk County, MA
