Wheeling police make a startling discovery in Center Wheeling. A resident living at Luau Manor reported seeing dogs inside a truck cab for days. When Wheeling Police arrived on the scene, they found a red pickup with three dogs in the front cab. The truck had a wooden, hand-built cap with pad locks on the bed of the truck, which police found was hiding even more.
Doug McCroskey is the Ohio County Dog Warden and Animal Humane Officer. He seized all 17 animals held in the truck immediately after freeing them. He says the cats were stacked on top of one another in crates, which were filled with feces and urine, and the heat in the truck was unbearable. Neither food nor water were found with the animals.
The shelter's veterinarian estimated that the animals hadn't had anything to eat or drink in days. Amazingly, all of the animals seemed to be doing well. McCroskey says he's been doing this for 8 years, and he's never seen something like this. The owner, 59-year-old Leo Watcher of Warren, Michigan, could face criminal charges. If he wants the animals back, he'll have to file something in Magistrate Court. For now, the animals remain at the animal shelter.
