Two rottweilers were found neglected in a rental home, with their collars grown into their necks. The dogs had been left behind in Thompson's home with no food or water and on thick chains that did serious damage.
Lynn Williams saw the dogs in their neglected environment and says, "it was just so bad that it made me sick ... you could smell the rotting flesh on their necks." Key witness Jill Bierwith says, "in one case the chain had actually grown into the neck. The flesh had grown around it and a vet had to surgically remove it."
Williams says, "their necks were cut so bad. It's been 30 or 40 days and their necks are still gaped open." "Those will probably take at least six weeks or so to completely heal," says Brandy Singleton, who is a volunteer for the local animal activist group Speak for Animals. She's agreed to be a foster mother for the dogs while their medical treatments continue. Once they've healed, the search for a permanent home will begin. Singleton says, "we would really just like them both to be in a good home where they're each taken care of."
On July 29, 2005, Thompson was found guilty on two counts of animal cruelty and is serving 60-days in jail.
