An Auburndale man was arrested on animal cruelty charges after 17 dogs were found at his home tied up and without food, some of them with their eyes swollen shut from infection, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies first spoke to Christopher Pierce, 25, on the night of July 26 at his home on Pine Road because they were looking for an acquaintance of his. Deputies found the man in Pierce's backyard, an arrest report said.

When the property was searched, deputies found 17 dogs chained to trees, fence posts and support beams. The arrest report said none of the dogs had food available and only two had water, and all appeared to be malnourished.

Pierce was charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies also found a small amount of marijuana and charged Pierce with possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to reports.
