A 1-year-old tabby somehow managed to squeeze through a set of two standard doggy doors with about 8 inches of an arrow protruding from both of her sides.
Her owner, Janice Knop, is not sure how this happened. The cat was shot with an arrow sometime overnight between June 2 and 3. Knop woke up that morning to find Little Miss was not in her usual spot on the bed.
"I told my dog, Nova, we have to go find our kitty," Knop said. "I found her propped up in the laundry room with an arrow piercing through her shoulders."
Somehow, Little Miss managed to stay alive. Knop took the kitty to the Pine Bluff Animal Hospital in Morris, where veterinarian Brian Schmidt performed surgery on the 9-pound feline.
"The arrow penetrated both shoulder blades," Schmidt said. "One of our biggest concerns was whether or not the arrow had pierced through her esophagus."
Schmidt took X-rays and was able to put a tube down the cat's throat.
The surgery took less than an hour. Little Miss had to stay in the animal hospital for four days before being released back to Knop's care. The fortunate feline had no complications while recovering from surgery.
Knop does not know if Little Miss was shot in her yard or not. A 6-foot fence surrounds her back yard, and a set of doggy doors is the only way for the cat to get in and out of the home.
Carbon Hill does not have its own police department, so Grundy County police are investigating the incident. Sheriff Terry Marketti said a detective has spoken with neighbors, but has not yet found any eyewitnesses. His office will be turning to Crimestoppers for help.
"We were not able to find fingerprints on the arrow," Marketti said. "Hopefully, someone will come forward."
Marketti said the person who shot the cat with the arrow could face charges of endangerment to an animal and criminal damage to property. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
