A Polk County man has been arrested for severely neglecting horses and donkeys in his care. Deputies on the night of July 26 arrested 32-year-old Eddie Granger, charging him with animal cruelty.

The five animals were seized and taken to the sheriff's office farm, but deputies said one Arabian horse was 500 pounds underweight and had to be euthanized.

"It was suffering from malnutrition, not being fed and cared for. The horse was basically skin and bones," stated Lt. Hugh Taylor of the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The animals belong to Granger's ex-girlfriend.

If found guilty, Granger could face up to five years in prison.

Case Updates

The caretaker of five horses that were found malnourished was released from the Polk County Jail on Wednesday, a day after his arrest on animal-cruelty charges.

Five horses were found so severely neglected on Tuesday that one of them had to be euthanized, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. Their caretaker, Eddie Granger, 32, of Highway 640 in Bartow was arrested on animal-abuse charges, the Sheriff's Office said.

Jail records show he was released Wednesday on $3,000 bail.

Granger had been caring for the horses, which are owned by a Punta Gorda woman, since February, the Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives say Granger failed to water, feed and shelter the horses.

A 10-year-old Arabian stud horse was about 500 pounds underweight and had to be euthanized because of the extreme malnourishment, the Sheriff's Office said. The remaining four horses are being treated at the Sheriff's Office's farm in Bartow.
