A South Side man was charged on July 12 with animal cruelty after police seized 29 dogs, many malnourished, from inside a security agency truck. Ricardo Lopez, 41, was driving a 1996 GMC truck at about 11:15 a.m. when officers pulled him over at 2801 W. Madison St. because they thought the truck was in disrepair, police News Affairs Officer Carlos Herrera said.
Lopez was driving the truck for an unknown security company that provides canine services, Herrera said. He did not know why the police thought the truck was broken.
Upon inspection, the police officer noticed at least two dogs per cage on the truck bed, Herrera said. A closer look revealed that many of them seemed underweight and malnourished.
"The officer felt the dogs were being treated cruelly," Herrera said.
The dogs, German shepherds and Rottweilers, were taken to the Animal Care and Control center at 2741 S. Western Ave.
No information was available about their conditions.
Lopez, of the 5200 block of South Troy Street, was also cited with having an expired driver's license and failing to show proof of insurance for the truck he was driving, Herrera said.
Further charges were possible after a veterinarian's inspection of the dogs, Herrera said. The results would be available "in a couple days," he said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
