On the evening of July 14, four local teenagers reportedly burned a seven-month-old kitten. Oaklawn Apartment residents say the kitten ran into a puddle to put the fire out. Authorities say the kitten received second and third degree burns, mostly to its lower body.
"You could smell the burn from the flesh and from the lighter fluid," said Animal Control officer Robert Sims.
The kitten was burned so badly that animal control officers could not tell if it was male or female.
A Mobile Police Department spokesperson says that two of the teenagers responsible are 14 years old and the other two are 15. All four are being held at the Strickland Youth Center.
"They admitted doing it, but neither would admit which one did it first," Sims told NBC 15's Brian Johnson.
All four juveniles are being charged with animal cruelty, which is a class C felony. They face fines of up to $1,000 and a year in jail.
Lemont Smith lives in the Oaklawn Apartments. When he found out what happened, he put some milk in a cup and placed the kitten inside an ice chest until authorities arrived on the scene.
"I wouldn't want anybody to do my pet like that. That was wrong," Smith said.
The kitten has since been put to sleep. References« AL State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Mobile County, AL
