Cruel castration with thin wire Maui, HI (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 14, 2005 County: Maui
Disposition: Not Charged
Abuser names unreleased
A mixed-breed dog that apparently had fled its owner had run away for a good reason, Maui Humane Society Executive Director Jocelyn Bouchard reported July 15. The male dog was a victim of an attempted "home neutering," with a thin wire tightly wound around its testicles.
"This will cause the blood flow to be cut off to the area, eventually resulting in the necrosis of the testicles," she said. "As you can imagine, this is an extremely painful way to neuter an animal and the risk for complications such as infection are tremendous.
"This dog was neutered under anesthesia today."
Bouchard reported the incident because she said it is an example of pet owners using a cruel method to deal with a problem or being unaware of the injuries they are causing.
The home-neutering tactic is not common, but she said it happens.
"We see it every year or so. It's happening less often than it used to, but it may be it's the old-school owners who grew up doing that to their animals," she said. References « More cases in Maui County, HI
