A puppy confined to a shed during a hot and humid July 17 afternoon weather was supposed to be a birthday present. Elkhart Patrolman Ben Eaton reported that he was sent to the 1900 block of Sterling Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. A woman told Eaton she had heard a dog yelping and went to check on it.

In a closed, wooden shed off the public alley, the witness found a 10-week-old pitbull puppy. The dog was covered in its own feces and left without any food or water in the shed, according to the police report. The officer estimated the outdoor temperature at 90 degrees.

Eaton called for a worker from the Humane Society of Elkhart County. The dog was taken to the shelter, where he was cleaned and evaluated, said Lisa Young, co-director of the Humane Society.

"The puppy was covered in feces, dehydrated and listless," Young said.

Later that day, Eaton found the owner of the dog. The woman told the officer she got the dog the day before.

"(She) added that the dog was supposed to be a birthday present for her son and that she wanted to surprise him. (She) said that she put the puppy in the crate in the shed and was going to keep him in there until her son's birthday, which was later this month," Eaton reported.

"So it would've been dead when she opened the door and said, 'Surprise!'" Young said.

According to the police report, "(The owner) said that she did not care about the puppy and that the shelter could keep him."

That fits with the shelter's plan, according to Young. By Monday afternoon, the dog dubbed "Scooter" was doing great, she said.

The dog likely will go to an Elkhart County pitbull rescue group after the 10-day holding period.
