Five people a mother, father and their two sons as well as another man were indicted by a Pickens County grand jury on multiple counts of animal fighting, drug charges and conspiracy, said Mark Plowden, a spokesman for South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster.

William Rudolph Bowens Sr., 52; Teresa Chavis Bowens, 50; Bryant Elree Bowens, 25; William R. Bowens Jr., 29; and James Brandon Harris, 26, were arrested in 2004 after Pickens County Sheriffs deputies started an undercover drug investigation into the family.

Undercover deputies and agents with the State Law Enforcement Division showed up at the Bowens family home at 162 Bowen Road in Easley on Sept. 22, 2000.

During an undercover drug buy that netted cocaine and marijuana, officers also noticed another illegal activity going on at the home: pit bull fighting.

Mr. Plowden said deputies uncovered treadmills and other dog training equipment. Seventeen pit bull terriers, most of which were marked and scarred from fighting, were kept on the property.

"Animals used in fighting are trained to kill one another and anything else that gets around them," Mr. Plowden said. "They can not, in any way, be adopted. They will be kept as evidence. Once the case is settled, the dogs will be euthanized. Thats one of the sad points of this."

The five arrested are being held at the Pickens County Detention Center.

The Bowens sons, Bryant and William Bowens Jr., have been charged with 17 counts each of animal fighting and conspiracy, in addition to the drug charges.
