Man eats neighbor's cat
Anchorage, AK (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Dec 31, 1987
County: Anchorage

Disposition: Not Charged

Person of Interest: Name Undisclosed

A man in Anchorage cannot be prosecuted for eating his neighbor's cat. The authorities say cannot be prosecuted because eating animals is not against the law, although cruelty to animals is against the law in Alaska.

A neighbor asked the man to look after his cat and kittens because he was allergic to cats and couldn't have them in his house any longer. The neighbor was looking for homes for the cat and its kittens.

The owner, Shayne Calkins, said the man dropped by his home one day last week to tell him he was having the cat for dinner.

"He said he was cooking it up because he didn't have any food in the house. He said he was hungry so he ate my cat."

Head of the enforcement at the Anchorage Animal Control Center, Mike Campbell, says there was not enough evidence to pursue an investigation of cruelty to the animal.
