An organge and white cat identified as "Morris" was found hanging from the Newbury High School flagpole a day before the first day of school was to start.

The cat was suspended by a noose and hoisted a few feet up the flagpole to make it look like the cat was seated in a chair had that been placed on the lawn. Next to the chair with the cat was an empty beer bottle.

The Geauga County humane officer said an autopsy confirmed the cat had been beaten to death.

The custodian found the cat in the school yard along with some 55 gallon drums, wire fencing and two Dairy Mart signs. Trees were draped with tissue paper.

School Superintendent Robert Faehnle said little damage was done to the school. He is offering a $50 reward for information about those responsible. The vandals had broken into the school through a window.

The Humane Society established its own reward fund with $100. The fund quickly grew to be $500. People can send contributions to P.O. Box 342, Chardon, OH 44024.

A Newbury Township woman who lives on Auburn Road identified the abused cat as Morris her son's 7-year old pet.
