Cat dunked in fountain, thrown into wall Arlington, TX (US)Incident Date: Monday, Jun 3, 1985 County: Tarrant
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Raymond Harless
Raymond Harless, 24, lists his address as an Arlington motel. He was arrested after a police spokesman described one of the most "blatant instances of cruelty" to an animal police have seen.
Harless remained in jail Friday after bail was set at $20,000. Normal bail for the offense is between $250 and $500.
Witnesses said Harless walked into the courtyard of an apartment complex around noon carrying a stray cat by the tail. Harless then dunked the cat headfirst into a fountain three or 4 times, swung it by the tail several times and hurled into a brick wall.
The suspect left for a moment and was heading back toward the animal with a screwdriver in his hand. The suspect was confronted by the witnesses, said something profane and then left the scene. The unconscious cat died before officers could take it to a veterinarian.
The cat's body has been frozen and stored at the city health department in case an autopsy is needed to determine the exact cause of its death. The Class A misdemeanor offense of cruelty to animals is punishable by up to a year in jail, a fine of up to $2,000 or both. References- Houston Chronicle - June 8, 1985
