Eric Kiernan, 18, of Belfast has been charged with cruelty to animals after he allegedly put a 8-month old male cat in a microwave oven and cut off its whiskers. The cat was named Ibbles by a former owner. The cat managed to survive its abuse and is being cared for at the Claude Clement Animal Shelter.
Kiernan was incarcerated in the Waldo County Jail on burglary and theft charges since January 12. He was formally charged with the cat abuse last Friday. Kiernan has denied the abuse charges.
The abuse was believed to have occurred early in January at the Patterson Hill home of Hugh Pomeroy. The authorities were notified by the original owner of Ibbles that Kiernan had placed the cat in a microwave and "turned it on" for about 30 seconds.
Pomeroy also said Kiernan admitted cutting the cat's whiskers. Kiernan said he "thought it would be funny because the cat would walk around weird and would have no sense of balance."
Another witness, Eric Stevens, told the detective he was present when Kiernan clipped the cat's whiskers and saw Kiernan kick the cat across the room.
Pomeroy said he also saw Kiernan kick the cat with such force it struck the wall four feet above the floor. He also saw him pick the cat up by the tail and throw it out the door.
Aaron Talgo, another potential witness said on one occasion Kiernan tried to flush the cat down the toilet. He said he didn't see it, but he heard the flushing and saw the cat come out of the bathroom soaking wet.
Teens from the Patterson Hill neighborhood brought Ibbles to the shelter after they heard of the torture and mistreatment. It was said the cat couldn't stand nor see when it first arrived at the shelter and had to be force fed baby formula with bottles and tubes. For two days the cat passed and spit up blood. It had seizures lasting five minutes.
The cat appears to be responding to medical treatment but he still has problems. It is thought the cat might have suffered brain damage.
People are still concerned because there is still a gray cat and a puppy in that house.
