Dog killed with with sledgehammer, cat drowned
Feasterville Trevose, PA (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Mar 31, 1996
County: Bucks

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Joseph Ridlon

Joseph Ridlon, 18, of the 1200 block of Haines Avenue was charged on March 31 after police found a small brown dog dead in a pool of blood in the driveway.

Ridlon has been held for trial in Bucks County Court on cruelty to animal charges for allegedly beating the family dog to death with a sledgehammer and drowning the family cat.

Police Officer Raymond Branden, Lower Southampton, discovered the dead dog in the driveway. He said Ridlon admitted killing the dog and family cat "because they were old and going to die soon any way."

Officer Branden said he found a smashed concrete statue of an angel lying near the dead dog. Ridlon didn't appear to be upset at the time and told him he killed the cat "to put it out of its misery."

Ridlon's grandmother also testified she heard a loud noise outside and found the bird bath broken. Ridlon lived with his grandmother. When she asked her grandson about the noise, he told her to "go back into the house."

The grandmother said she saw the dead dog lying in a pool of blood. She also found out he had killed the cat and buried it.

A July 12 date has been set for Ridlon's arraignment in county court.
