Dominic Cosentino, 22, has been arrested by a Humane Society investigator as he was leaving his job as his family's business, Cosentino's Vegetable Haven, a gourmet supermarket at South Bascom and Union Avenues in San Jose.

Cosentino was charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly shooting and wounding two cats and possibly many more with a bow and arrow.

One anonymous caller said he overhead Cosentino brag he had killed 50 cats, and another said Cosentino has been hunting the felines with a bow for years. Some people who had called the Humane Society stated they heard Cosentino bragging about being the person who killed the cats after publicity about the case.

Since May 4, the society has treated three cats that had been shot with expanding tip arrows in an open area near Camden Avenue and Branham Lane. One of the latest victims was a stray that had been fed by a local resident that had to be put to death May 14. The arrow hit the animal in the upper leg and passed completely through its body.

Eleanor Best, who lives in the area where the cats were shot and feeds strays, said at least seven cats have apparently disappeared from the area since January.

If Cosentino is convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in county jail, fine of $20,000 or both. He is being held on a $10,000 bail at Santa Clara County Jail.

Mike Frazer, humane society investigator, said publicity about the case and a $2,000 reward offered by the Humane Society of the Santa Clara Valley and two archery groups prompted more than 20 tips that led authorities to Cosentino. It was not decided who would receive the reward.
