Cat given methamphetamine
Pocatello, ID (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jul 15, 2005
County: Bannock

Disposition: Not Charged

Person of Interest: Maximo Trinidad Ornelas

A man arrested for methamphetamine July 15 allegedly told police he gave the powerful stimulant to a pet cat. Maximo Trinidad Ornelas, 22, 1831 Derby, is charged with possession of meth with intent to deliver and possession of paraphernalia.

"Witnesses indicated the cat was acting erratically," Pocatello Police Capt. Kirk Nelson said.

Nelson said Ornelas' neighbors called police when they saw his cat behaving strangely. Animal control searched for the animal, but Ornelas reportedly put the cat outside and it wasn't located.

Nelson said police found about 3 grams of meth in the residence, which was enough to charge Ornelas with intent to deliver the drug.

Nathan Balis, 20, 9761 Pocatello Creek Road was arrested at the scene for possessing meth and paraphernalia as well as frequenting an establishment where drugs are sold.

Ornelas remains in the Bannock County Jail in lieu of $11,000 bond. Balis' bond is set at $21,000.

If convicted of the felony offenses, both men, who have preliminary hearings scheduled July 25 in Rob Naftz courtroom, face up to seven years in prison.
