Failure to provide vet care or euthanasia
Pine Bush, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jul 13, 2005
County: Orange

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ricky M. Severo

Two weeks after veterinarians recommended that it be euthanized, a pony with a fractured leg is missing and its owner has been arrested on animal cruelty charges.

According to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office, the Shetland pony, owned by Ricky M. Severo of Jansen Road, Pine Bush, suffered a compound fracture to its foreleg sometime over July 4th weekend. Two separate veterinarians examined the pony on July 6 and 8 and advised Severo that the only humane thing was to put down the animal, police said. Severo refused to have the pony euthanized and told vets that he would investigate a possible surgical solution, deputies said.

According to deputies, Severo had not addressed the situation as of July 13. On July 15, deputies with a warrant searched Severo's home and failed to find the injured pony. Severo was charged with two misdemeanor counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals as well as failure to provide sustenance, deputies said, adding that Severo had failed to provide veterinary care to the animal since April 1996.

Deputies have asked anyone with information as to the whereabouts or condition of the pony to call Detective Michael Andrews or Deputy Thomas Nace of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office at (845) 338-3640.

Deputies were assisted by the Ulster County SPCA and veterinarians from Pine Bush Equine and Gardiner Animal Hospital.
