Some former volunteers of a Chihuahua rescue center founded by the former daughter-in-law of the late actor Gregory Peck are accusing her of keeping the dogs in filthy conditions.

About a dozen people showed up at the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, July 18 to urge a commissioner to order Kimi Peck to place 275 of the pint-sized dogs into new homes. She agreed to move the dogs to new locations and close the two-year-old Chihuahua Rescue center to settle city citations claiming improper care of the animals.

"Kimi Peck seems to be hoarding dogs rather than finding homes for them," said Rene Barge, an attorney for the former volunteers.

Peck has received support from celebrities, including actors Delta Burke and Mickey Rourke. She founded the shelter with money she earned from writing the screenplay for the 1980 Tatum O'Neal comedy "Little Darlings."

Peck said she has spent $10 million of her own money rescuing and caring for dogs.

Two years ago, Peck helped save about 200 neglected Chihuahuas who were seized and slated to be euthanized following a raid on a breeder's shelter.

Earlier in 2005, however, Burbank officials cited Peck involving the animals in her care. Most of the charges were dropped in May 2005 when Peck agreed to move the animals to new locations and close the shelter by October.

Monday's hearing was continued to August after Peck's attorney told the court that his client had just 88 dogs left at the facility. Peck said she moved out 100 dogs on July 17 because she was concerned authorities were about to raid the shelter.

Peck's opponents were skeptical of that claim.

Peck's supporters say she's done nothing wrong, and Peck claims she's the victim of a smear campaign launched by a homeless former volunteer who's angry that Peck wouldn't let her sleep at the shelter. She said she's going to relocate the shelter -- possibly to Northern California or Arizona.
